Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day Family Style
When we were younger, March 17th used to mean pub crawls and a legitimate reason for day drinking that went well into the night. With the right food, décor and attire, St. Patrick’s Day can also be a fun, family-friendly celebration!
Why Do We Celebrate?
You probably didn’t know that the man who inspired this Irish holiday was not actually Irish. Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the late 4th century, but became a Christian missionary in Ireland where he explained the Holy Trinity to the Irish using the three leaves of a shamrock. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches and schools throughout Ireland. Centuries later, we still honor this patron saint of Ireland on March 17th.
Rock Some Shamrocks
With the right decorations, you’ll have your home looking way more festive than an Irish Pub! Find these stylish shamrock designs that you can personalize with your name at Personalized Planet.
Wear Green
The wearing of the green on St. Patrick’s Day honors the tradition of the Irish donning shamrocks and the color green to symbolize their faith and support for an independent Ireland. At Personalized Planet, you’ll find socks, T-shirts and even a pet bandana to celebrate this custom.
Food and Drink
Keep it classic by serving corned beef and cabbage at your St. Paddy’s Day feast. Besides being a traditional favorite of the holiday, this dish is fairly easy to prepare for a crowd. For dessert try a minty, green refreshing treat-grasshopper pie. No insects are involved; this yummy pie is made with crème de menthe, whipped cream, marshmallows and a chocolate cookie crust.
Of course, green beer and Guinness are the standard spirits to drink on St. Patrick’s Day. You can make your own green beer at home by adding a couple of drops of green food coloring to a light lager beer. Make sure to serve in a glass beer mug! The kiddos can enjoy a Green River soda or a Shirley Temple with green food coloring.
Your St. Pat’s bash is sure to be a blast for family and friends! Sláinte!
