Sunflowers Everywhere!

The vibrant sunflower has long been a favorite of many for its bright and cheery appearance. Symbolic of happiness, loyalty and long life, this flower is not only prevalent in gardens and bouquets, but is widely used as an emblem in home décor, clothing and artwork. Since becoming a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine during the Russian invasion, the sunflower’s popularity has blossomed to new heights overnight. We are seeing this national flower of Ukraine featured everywhere from an emoji on social media to a celebrity wardrobe accent.

This would not be the first time a flower’s popularity has grown due to conflict. The poppy became a military symbol when it mysteriously sprouted up over European lands both after Napoleon’s invasion and World War I. The red flower was a symbol of the blood shed during war, but also represented hope for the future. It remains a symbol for veterans today.

The sunflower is the perfect symbol for hope during adversity. They are hardy flowers that can withstand heat and drought and come back year after year. Not just an emblem for hope, the sunflower is actually known to have healing properties. The oil can be used as an anti-inflammatory and to reduce cholesterol, while the leaves are made into a tea that treats lung ailments and fevers.

Going into the summer months we would expect to see the sunflower’s prevalence continue. Besides being a powerful symbol of support for Ukraine, it is such a colorful and sunny flower that expresses the positivity the world needs right now for so many reasons. Sunflower designs will appear on everything from cupcakes to cell phone covers. People will be decorating their gardens, their homes and themselves with this sunny flower. It is the symbol of the moment. This generation’s peace sign.

Hopefully, peace is restored to Ukraine soon. The popularity of the sunflower may long remain as a symbol of its people’s strength and resilience.
